What: The University YMCA will host Rev. Dr. Cindi Love from Soulforce on “Fundamentalism, Freedom, and Faith” on March 8th at Friday Forum.

When: March 8, 2013, 12 Noon

Where: Latzer Hall, University YMCA, 1001 S. Wright Street, Champaign, Illinois

Details: The talk will focus on the challenges faced by the LGBTQ community and other marginalized communities, who are often subjected to the violence of exclusion, and highlight the non-violent efforts made by Soulforce to resist the oppression arising out of fundamentalism. Local church and political officials as well as the media are invited to speak with Rev. Dr. Cindi Love before and after the noontime talk.

Background: Successful entrepreneur and corporate executive turned minister, Rev. Dr. Cindi Love is the Executive Director of Soulforce as well as a regular contributor to the Huffington Post. Love also serves on the United Nations UUO Coalition for LGBT Human Rights and authored the book Would Jesus Discriminate? named for the international campaign of the same name.

Soulforce is a national non-profit organization dedicated to bring freedom to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people from religious & political oppression. It also challenges other forms of oppression including sexism, racism and classism. Soulforce accomplishes its mission primarily through community organizing, education and training, advocacy for public and private institutional policy change and street-based nonviolent resistance to overt discrimination.

"Soulforce, Rev. Dr. Cindi Love" is a part of the Friday Forum Spring 2013 lecture series, Faith in Action. The series will feature speakers from across the spectrum of faith traditions that are compelled by their faith to engage in bold and creative forms of action. All lectures are free and open to the public. Y Eatery is available during the lecture: $6.50/3.00 student.

Store, an earned-income enterprise of our local education foundation, CUSF, we’re passionate about finding fun, functional and creative reuse for the materials we often take for granted. With a massive and ever-changing inventory of donated materials, projects of all sizes have never been as easy or Earth-friendly. We’re a store, a community, a donation center – we are a marketplace of items and ideas!

Our store supplies everyone – teachers, artists, crafters, students, program directors, community groups, churches, homeschoolers, and the curious with quality, safe reusable materials for artistic creations, the classroom, experimenting and more. We are your marketplace. Shop, share, donate, and volunteer in a fun and educational way and support our local schools through the Champaign Urbana Schools Foundation at the same time!

So why this store?

Every day, vast amounts of the Earth’s resources are sold as products for our use. Large or small, in our homes, businesses, or factories – it’s everywhere! And when we use them up, or can’t use them all, we just throw them away. Sometimes we wash it and use it again, we try to recycle, we keep stuff in our closets or we give it to our friends, but we wish there was something else we could do with all. that. stuff.

It’s all part of “The Waste Stream.” It flows day after day in an endless cycle – new resources being used while creating more and more waste.

But it can be interrupted!

The. I.D.E.A. Store is a simple and fun way to pluck the good stuff out of the waste stream and find it a use in our everyday lives. Participating in our little project – either as a customer, donator, or volunteer – is a way that you can help give old items a new life.

CUDO’s mission is to cultivate a vibrant design culture that engages and enriches our local community.

CUDO was founded in early 2009 by a group of local designers who were eager to meet others who shared their passion for design. While CUDO started as a professional organization for graphic designers, it has since evolved to be a far more inclusive organization for everyone who loves design, whether you are a professional, student, or avid fan (aka design nerd).

Since its inception, CUDO has held events (http://thecudo.org/events/) that range from socials to gallery shows to the popular PechaKucha Night C-U, which highlights inspiringly creative local stories in a unique fashion. We have also held workshops, movie screenings, and have run a highly popular (and free!) job board (http://thecudo.org/job-board/) that has connected local designers with the community. Fundamentally, we’re a collection of people from all walks of life who love design and want to meet and hang out with other kindred design-loving spirits.

CUDO hopes to inspire people to take an active role in creating the world around them.

Prairie Crossroads Blues Society is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization formed to promote blues music and artists in East Central Illinois. Our mission is to preserve, promote and educate the public about the great American music heritage know as "The Blues".

Heartland Gallery is an art gallery/gift shop specializing in Celtic art and handcrafted items from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Cornwall, as well as parts of the U.S. and Canada. Heartland Gallery also has several local and regional artists on consignment. Owner Jan Chandler started the business in September 2006 after a full semester spent in Dublin and many travels to the Celtic lands. The gallery's collection includes paintings, photography, ceramics, jewelry, glass, metal, wood, textiles (knitwear), and many giftware items, ranging in price from $2 to $750. In addition, Jan also rents a space in the gallery to Bernard Cesarone for Kalarte Gallery, his collection of folk art items from Latin America, India, and West Africa. Heartland Gallery is also a small performance venue for predominantly Celtic entertainment (music, dance, dramatic performances, storytelling, etc.) and folk music of any kind. Since 1873 the University YMCA has sponsored programs, organizations and activities dedicated to fostering ethical and principled leadership dedicated to building a better world, better human relations and better care for the Earth.

Some of the most profound insight, critique, and creative thinking around the issues which comprise the mission of the Y happen in and around the arts. Art @ the Y seeks to engage issues of social justice, international understanding, environmental activism, faith and cultural understanding through quality arts programming. Art @ the Y includes a revolving exhibition space in Murphy Gallery, featuring artists whose work speaks to the mission of the Y as well as performing arts events throughout the year.

In 2008, the Urbana Public Arts Program and Commission was established by the Urbana City Council to foster a city where all residents—emerging artists, established artists, and “non-artists” alike—may engage with the arts and where artists thrive and are valued. The Arts, as used in this program, include but are not limited to music, theatre, visual arts, dance, creative writing, film/video, crafts, performing arts, spoken word, environmental arts, multimedia arts, architectural arts, landscape architecture, and emerging media. Through public support for the arts, the City of Urbana increases opportunities for the creation of art, thereby enhancing the quality of life, economic development, citizen participation, cultural awareness, and vibrancy of the community.

Founded in 2001, in Champaign, Illinois, the Champaign-Urbana Storytelling Guild consists of a group of local storytellers who share stories, ideas, and information on regional concerts and events. Guild members are at all levels of storytelling abilities, from beginner through professional. From the start, the Guild has been involved with local special events, concerts, and Tellabration! Through these efforts, Guild members have the opportunity to obtain experience along with exposing the public to the 'magic' and art of storytelling.
