Champaign Urbana Theatre Company will kick off Champaign’s summer nights with the musical comedy, “Grease.” Performances are June 14-16 and 21-23 at 7 p.m. and June 17 and 24 at 2 p.m. at Parkland College’s Harold and Jean Miner Theatre, 2400 W. Bradley Ave., Champaign.

General admission tickets are $14 for adults and $12 for seniors 65+ and students under 18. Purchase tickets through cutc.org or by calling 217-352-4085.

The artistic team is led by director/choreographer Whitney Havice and vocal director Liz Martin. Havice has been involved with more than 60 CUTC productions since 1994. “Grease” marks her debut as a director.

The 50+-member cast brings together area students in middle school and high school, with Katie Witruk (of Mahomet) as Sandy, Finn Dallas (of Urbana) as Danny, Ruth Zielke (of Champaign) as Rizzo, and Laramie Ziegler (of Danville) as Kenicke.

Havice says, "One of the biggest draws in directing the Kathy Murphy student production of Grease is the chance to work with some of the most talented student actors, singers, and dancers in the area. Grease is a cherished member of the American lexicon, from its well-known, toe-tapping songs to its iconic characters, and this cast brings an energy and level of talent that will make this particular production unforgettable to audiences."

Set in 1959 at the fictional Rydell High, “Grease” features the irresistible songs from the Tony Award-nominated Broadway show and hit movie, including: “Summer Nights,” “Greased Lightning,” “You’re the One That I Want,” and “Hopelessly Devoted to You.”
The Champaign Urbana Theatre Company is community theatre for the community, by the community, since 1991. Kathy Murphy was one of the founding members of the Champaign Urbana Theatre Company and was a unifying life force throughout the company’s history. She passed away on April 27, 2009. Kathy had a vision of bringing together middle and high school students from all over the area so they could get to know each other and perform together. “Grease” is the 13th Annual Kathy Murphy Student Production.
