An Introduction to Experimental Free Music Improvisation with the Wu-Morse Duo at The Urbana Free Library

Friday, October 6, 2017
The Lewis Auditorium (Ground Floor) at The Urbana Free Library

Free Improvisation has been called the world’s oldest form of musical expression. Free from harmonic, melodic and genre conventions, the style of Free Improvisation allows for complete musical expression and explorations of pure sound within a highly interactive, collaborative and non-judgmental sonic laboratory.

Workshop: Free and open to all serious teens and young adults who wish to push the boundaries of their musical expression and deepen their listening skills while exploring the sonic capabilities of their instruments/voices. Learn the basics of Free Improvisation, and then apply what you have learned in live performance with the Wu-Morse Duo. The workshop will be directed by experienced improvisers Allen Wu and Barry R. Morse (Wu-Morse Duo) who will lead group exercises designed to introduce young players to new performance possibilities beyond the traditional notated, conducted, and chord-progression based compositions and arrangements of Western music. All instruments (acoustic, electronic, percussion, ethnic) and voices are welcome. Full, enthusiastic participation is expected to maximize learning and fun!

Performance: Workshop participants are encouraged to join the Wu-Morse Duo and apply their discoveries in a live performance of experimental electro-acoustic improvisation during the Prairie Breezes family concert on Saturday morning.
