Independent Media Center

Come see what we've been up to at Open Scene, IMC's NEA-funded youth arts project on Saturday, May 6, 2-5 p.m. We'll be having an art auction to raise money for youth programming at IMC!

At this culminating event, we'll hear from local youth about a new vision for IMC and Urbana.

We'll be having an art auction with 8 new posters by Langston Allston, local muralist, among them the image attached. Bring a friend, and bring your check books!

We're raising money to support more collaborations with Open Scene youth leaders, a new after school program with Janice Mitchell's Neighborhood Connections, and launch a new music studio with Jamie Gatson aka J.Tune.

Make a donation now to support CU's youth!

Champaign-Urbana based Etherphonic Theremin Orchestra will perform improvised otherworldly soundscapes live at the Orpheum Theatre, 346 N. Neil St., Champaign, on Saturday, May 6 at 2:45 pm. Preceding the concert at 2:00 pm also at the Orpheum Theatre will be a lecture given by Barry R. Morse, founder and director of the ensemble, on the history, music and musical stylings of this strange instrument. Tickets are available at the door and all proceeds will benefit the refurbishing of the Orpheum Theatre.

The theremin is the world’s oldest electronic musical instrument still in use, having been invented in 1920. It is also the only instrument which is played without any physical contact: the player waves his/her hands in the air around two antennas to produce eerie, whistling sounds which rise and fall in smooth arcs of continuous pitch change. The sounds are then amplified and projected over loudspeakers. The theremin’s weird sound is famous for its use in 1950s era science fiction movies.

The Etherphonic Theremin Orchestra consists of nine (9) of these unique instruments, which is eight more than most people ever get to see in one place at the same time. The Orchestra is unique also in that the music is improvised but controlled by special hand signals given by Barry R. Morse, the director, who will sculpt sonic masses out of thin air in real time. All of the performers are local citizens who will train beforehand in two special workshops given by the director. This performance on May 6, will also be unusual in that it will be a performance-in-the-round: the whole orchestra will surround the audience which will be seated in the middle. This “surround sound” feature is the brainchild of sound and video artist Jake Metz.

Cunningham Children’s Home - Spiritual Life Center, 1301 N. Cunningham Drive, Urbana, IL

Cunningham Children’s Home’s Festival of Quilts joins the Boneyard Arts Festival this spring as one of more than 90 galleries showcasing the arts in Central Illinois. This year Cunningham is excited to present a collection of show quilts that creatively blur the lines between conventional quilt making and fine art. The 13th annual Festival of Quilts will also include a silent auction and quilt boutique as well as a gift shop, bake sale and the Patchwork Café.

The Boneyard is a four-day event which brings together area businesses, organizations, and artists while promoting the cultural vibrancy of our community. As the Festival of Quilts has grown and the quilts submitted for viewing have evolved it became obvious to all who help with the event that many of our local artists are sharing their artwork through quilts.

We invite you to join us on Friday and Saturday, April 7th and 8th, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to enjoy the colorful and diverse exhibit as well as the silent auction.

This year’s event features two guest speakers. Friday and Saturday at 2 p.m., Deborah Fell will present stories of hope that inspire her work. Fell, a full time studio artist committed to the art quilt medium, is a professional member of the Studio Art Quilt Associates and Art Quilt Network. Well-known quilt teacher and lecturer Sherry Fourez Sollers will present her miniature quilts on Saturday at 11 a.m. Sollers is a competitive quilter throughout the Midwest.

Tickets are available at the door and are a $5.00 donation. All proceeds benefit children and youth served by Cunningham.
