About the exhibition: Referencing spiritual feminism of the 70's and 80's, CJ McCarrick connects the representation of the Virgin Mary with the ideals associated with mother, healer, earth, and fertility goddesses from around the world. McCarrick invokes these feminine forms to comment on their individual and independent power in a male dominated society. Using screen-printing, McCarrick duplicates images of the Virgin Mary, emphasizing the similarities between herself and other female deities. McCarrick illuminates the commonalities between differing religions to reflect on how they define those culture's identities, their spiritual practitioners, and their impact upon contemporary society today. This work also highlights the influential roles women play within the global community.

About the artist: CJ McCarrick is an MFA candidate in Sculpture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She received her BFA from Grand Valley State University in Ceramics. McCarrick has exhibited regionally, especially in Illinois and Michigan, and in a variety of group shows.
