IAC Master/Apprentice and Artists Fellowship Applications Now Available

August 1, 2005
Springfield - The Illinois Arts Council Master/Apprentice and Artists Fellowship applications for fiscal year 2006 are now available:

  • The Ethnic and Folk Arts Master/Apprentice Program recognizes the role of the master artist/apprentice relationship in the preservation of the state's cultural heritage.  In order to foster this teaching/learning arrangement, Ethnic and Folk Arts Master/Apprentice Grants will be awarded to a limited number of master artist/apprentice pairs.  The Master/Apprentice Program generally supports art forms found in informal rather than institutional settings.  Past awards have supported traditional art forms as diverse as East Indian dance, split wood baskets, Chinese drum and bell music, African drumming, and traditional American folk music.  Master/Apprentice awards are a fixed amount of $2000 and $1000 respectively.  The application deadline is September 1.

  • Non-matching Artist Fellowships in fixed amounts of $7000 are awarded to Illinois artists of exceptional talent to enable them to pursue their artistic goals.  Artists Fellowships are given to creative individuals in recognition of their outstanding work and commitment within the arts.  In addition, a limited number of Finalist Awards will be given.  These awards of $700 recognize and encourage additional applicants who demonstrate considerable talent.  Awards are highly competitive.  In past years, approximately 10% of total applicants have been awarded Fellowship or Finalist Awards.  The Artist Fellowship Program operates on a two-year rotating cycle.

The following discipline categories are being accepted for this application cycle: choreography, crafts, ethnic and folk arts, new performance forms, media arts, prose, and scriptworks.  Applicants can only apply in one category in a given fiscal year.  Individuals enrolled in any degree or certificate granting program at the time of application or during the award period are not eligible.  Applications are due September 1.

A limited number of copies of the applications are available in the 40 North/88 West office, 1817 S. Neil Street, Suite 201, Champaign, IL 61820.  Further information and additional copies can be obtained at www.state.il.us/agency/iac.
