Unity High School

The 11th annual All Out A Cappella concert will be held Saturday, January 28 at Unity High School auditorium in Tolono. There will be performances at 5 and 8 p.m. Both shows feature No Comment, Xtension Chords, Rip Chords, and Unseen from the University of Illinois; Clef Hangers and The Outlandish from Illinois State University; and Surreal Sound from Unity High School. Unseen and The Outlandish are both new groups that will be featured in this year’s show.

The evening will provide entertainment for the entire family. General admission tickets to each show are $15 for adults and $10 for students. Doors open at 4:30 for the 5 p.m. concert and 7:30 for the 8 p.m. concert. The event is sponsored by Unity Music Boosters with all proceeds going toward enhancing music in Unit 7 schools. Tickets may be purchased from Unity High School choral students and at the High School office, or ordered online at www.unitymusicboosters.org. Additional questions can be directed to 217-239-1914.

This is your opportunity to learn one of the world’s oldest skills, spinning yarn. Join members of the C-U Spinners and Weavers Guild as you learn the wonders of the drop spindle. Fee: $15 (includes the cost of the spindle and fibers). Bring a friend and save money while you double the fun. Admission for 2 is $25. Looking for a way to show your affection that won’t cost a fortune or require reservations? Join the Spurlock staff as we celebrate love around the world. Make a handmade card for your loved one, take a tour of love-related artifacts in the galleries, and listen to multicultural love stories. This event, held from 1-4 PM, is planned for an adult audience. Admission: $2 per craft.

Sunday, January 8, 2017 - 12:00pm to 4:00pm

Follow in the footsteps of Empress Hsi Ling Shi, credited in Chinese legend with the discovery of silk reeling, and learn the ancient art of how to reel thread from silk cocoons. The basics of silk reeling will be covered. Cocoons for reeling will be provided. Silk reeling equipment will be provided and will also be available for purchase. Students will go home with one spool of raw silk thread and one spool of degummed flat silk thread (suitable for embroidery). Itomakis (antique Japanese silk bobbins) will be available for purchase. Skill level of students: Beginning. Space is very limited, and pre-registration is required. Contact Kim Sheahan to reserve your place (217-244-3355 or ksheahan@illinois.edu). Workshop fee: $50/person (includes 80 silk cocoons, plastic spools, and degumming materials)
