Visit different cities where your creations spring to life out of wood, nails, paint, tile, and metal. This award-winning event will take place Saturday, May 2nd from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. when a dream pirate ship will be raffled to one lucky winner. All outdoor activities are free. Enjoy many performances from around the world in one afternoon…plus crafts for all ages! The Spurlock Museum invites you to WorldFest, Saturday, April 4, from 12:30 to 4:00 PM. The event, sponsored in part by the Illinois Arts Council, features performances of Brazilian guitar music by Renato Anesi, Middle Eastern Fusion music by the Wanees Zarour Ensemble, Indonesian dance by the Saman Dance Group, and storytelling by Kim Sheahan. We’re inviting all kids grades kindergarten through 8th grade to join us for a Prairie Gardens Design-An-Ad contest. One lucky contestant’s winning design being published in our Mother’s Day flyer…check out additional prizes and details below!

The Inspiration

Designs should be inspired by and include the following:

“Prairie Gardens
When you just can’t wait to garden”

The rest is all up to the kids!

3 competition Levels

Kindergarten – 1st grade
2rd – 5th grade
6th – 8th grade

Prizes

One design will be chosen from each competition level, with each contestant winning a FREE $50 gift card. An overall winning design will then be chosen with contestant winning additional prizes:Design will be published in our Mother’s day flyer found in the Sunday newspaper on May 10th. Plus, winning design will be professionally framed (a value up to $100), on us!

Guidelines

Designs can be dropped of in-store, scanned & emailed to info@prairiegardens, or mailed by April 10th.

Entries should include the child’s name, age, grade level and parental contact information. No child information will be published without parental consent.

One entry per contestant.

All parts of the ad must be created by the contestant and hand-drawn, rather than computer generated.

By submitting artwork to this contest, you agree to materials being used for marketing and advertising purposes.

The more fun the design the bigger it will be featured…who knows, you may have a flyer cover artist on your hands!

Parents and kids! Create, play, and learn together through crafts and activities from around the world in the Zahn Learning Center. The program is on Wednesdays from February 18 to March 25. The program lasts from 9:30 AM to noon. Cost: $2.00 per crafter requested.

The Museum is collaborating with the UIUC Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies (CEAPS) and Asian American Cultural Center for a family Museum event to celebrate Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day. Gallery activity areas include a Chinese painting demonstration, a station where children can have their name written in Chinese and Japanese, and a station where children can create their own papercuts and see Chinese papercuts on display. The Museum will offer Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day crafts for visitors of all ages in the Zahn Learning Center. Admission is free. 1:00-4:00 pm.

Alexander's day begins with gum stuck in his hair, followed by more calamities. Though he finds little sympathy from his family and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him, his mom, dad, brother, and sister all find themselves living through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.
Through 2/3-2/5 Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day will be playing at the Virginia Theatre. All shows start at 7pm and all tickets are $4. Hope to see you there!

Experience one of the greatest escapes of the Underground Railroad. Actress Jennifer Goran will portray Ellen Craft, who escaped slavery in 1848 by posing as a white man, on Sunday, February 1 at The Urbana Free Library.
