Open Scene Announces Call for Artists: Now taking applications for artists to join in community collaboration
Urbana, IL – The City of Urbana and the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center (UCIMC) are thrilled to announce the start of the second phase of Open Scene: Debuts of Youth’s Views in Downtown Urbana.
We are now taking applications for artists to participate. Four artists will be selected to lead arts workshops for twelve youth and ten community stakeholders that serve as project leaders. Each selected artist will lead a “weekend intensive” that allows participants to explore themes of social justice and/or community development through an art discipline.
This opportunity is open to all disciplines in the arts, including but not limited to creative writing, dance, film, video, music, theatre, visual arts, crafts, performing arts, hip hop, spoken word, environmental arts, multimedia arts (photography, videography, mixed media, animation, etc.), architectural arts, and emerging media. All genres, styles, and media will be considered.
Twelve community stakeholders and twelve youth will take part in the series of workshops and discussions. Together, youth and stakeholders represent Open Scene Leaders, who will develop criteria for artist selection, design the project’s guiding questions regarding livability and placemaking in downtown Urbana, and participate in four weekend intensives with selected artists. Using techniques learned from workshop intensives, they will help facilitate arts-based civic dialogue workshops for the community and publicly showcase creative work and research.
Those who would like to join Open Scene as artists can pick up application forms at the Independent Media Center or apply online here. The Public Arts Program will offer selected artists an amount not to exceed $3,000.00 for artist fees, transportation to and from Urbana, food, and lodging. All four arts workshops will take place in spring 2017, between February and April.
